The Tailero cover letter generator builds a one-page UK letter with opening, three paragraphs and close — exported as PDF per role. Sample below (James Wilson). Pair with your CV; see the application documents pack for send order.
Layout and address block
Your address (top left or right), employer address, date, subject line (Re: role title and reference if given), salutation, three paragraphs, sign-off (Yours sincerely if named; Yours faithfully if Sir/Madam).
Keep to one page — roughly 250–350 words. Match facts to your CV; the letter explains motivation, not a full career history.
British English spelling throughout. No emojis or slang. Filename: Surname_CoverLetter.pdf when sending with your CV.
| Block | Content | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Role reference and motivation | 4–5 lines |
| Middle | Skills with evidence | 6–8 lines |
| Close | Availability and call to action | 3–4 lines |
What each paragraph should do
Paragraph 1: show you read the advert — name the role, reference a requirement, and state why you are applying.
Paragraph 2: pick two achievements that match the job. Use numbers where possible; do not repeat the CV verbatim.
Paragraph 3: confirm availability for interview, mention notice period if relevant, and close politely. If the advert names a hiring manager, mirror that name in the salutation and sign-off.
Tone and common mistakes
Formal but not stiff. Active voice: “I led…” not “I was responsible for…”.
Avoid generic openings (“I am writing to apply…”) without a specific hook. Never send the same letter unchanged to multiple employers. UK recruiters expect British spelling (organisation, centre) even when the company is international.
Salary only if the advert asks — otherwise discuss at interview. Do not attach a second CV in the cover email.
Sending with your application pack
Typical UK order: cover letter first, then CV, then certificates. List attachments in the email body. See application documents pack.
After interview: send a thank-you note within 24 hours. For roles without a vacancy, use a speculative application structure instead.
Cover letter template PDF — free sample
Common search: “cover letter template PDF UK”. Download the filled sample (James Wilson) for length and tone, then edit in the generator.
Replace all fictional details before applying. The sample shows one-page layout — not a substitute for tailoring to each advert. Recruiters in the UK often skim the letter in under a minute; lead with role fit, not biography.
